Construction of houses for eight Roma families

Director of the Help Montenegro, Mr Klaus Mock, president of the Municipality of Herceg Nov, Ms Nataša Aćimović, and Deputy Ambassador of Germany in Podgorica, Mr Uwe Meerkotter signed today a Memorandum of Understanding, which is the first step in the realization of the project of construction of six prefabricated houses for eight socially vulnerable Roma families.
Thanks to the German Foreign Ministry, through the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe, 176,890 Euros was granted for a project that will permanently solve the housing problem of 23 members of Roma population who are now living in shacks in Šištet settlement.
Municipality of Herceg Novi donated the land in the village Drenovik, it will provide the infrastructure, access road, building and occupancy permits, whilw Help will provide project documentation and implement the project.
Samir Jaha, executive director of Young Roma and a representative of the local Roma community, stressed the importance of this project, especially because of the urgency of solving the housing problems of Roma who are temporarily residing in the Šištet settlement. The permanent solution of housing issues is of key importance for the overall Roma population, because it contributes to progress in other areas, notably education, employment and health care.
