Presentation of Monitoring Report on Position of Roma in Montenegro

Coalition Roma Circle and HumanitarianIn organized presentation of the Monitoring report on the situation, problems and needs of members of Roma and Egyptian population in Montenegro. The presentation was organized yesterday, on April 6 in Niksic. 

The report, presented by Veselj Beganaj and Slobodan Simović, was prepared within the framework of the project "Active Measures for active Roma and Egyptians" - AMARE, which is being implemented by Roma circle", NGO "Humanitarian", the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights of the Government of Montenegro, the Municipalities of Herceg Novi, Berane and Nikšić, NGO "Young Roma" - Herceg Novi and "Enfants" - Berane. The project is supported by the European Union and the Open Society Foundation from Budapest.

The presentation was attended by representatives of the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights of Montenegro, Municipality of Nikšić, Institute of Education of Montenegro, Faculty of Philosophy in Nikšić, and Roma civil society, including representatives of the NGO Young Roma, Samir Jaha and Dženita Brčvak.

Participants talked about the importance of collected data, as a platform for the preparation of the new Strategy for improving the situation of Roma 2016 - 2020, as well as local action plans.

Mr Jaha, reminded participants of the London Congress on April 8, 1971, when this minority was given the official name Roma [rom - man], 8 April was declared a International Roma's Day and Romani flag and anthem were selected.

The general conclusion from the conference is that there is some progress in improving the situation of Roma in Montenegro, but that the situation is still far from satisfactory and can be repaired only by coordinated action of all stakeholders, notably the relevant ministries, local governments, civil society and Roma themselves.
